though not obvious from the error message, this was due to an invalid path reference to a file referenced on dialogs.

Disregard the rc.exe command results. this happens on a working environment as well.

if you log the install it will give you a line number typically.

It will not prompt immediately, but are you saying you do not see the prompt when it gets to ExecuteAction as well?

You would set and retrieve through MSI properties. That is how the two could communicate.

This relates to article Q107312. I have a basic MSI project. In that project as the article indicates I am: 1) Using dynamic file linking 2) Using the previous package property (minor upgrade) 3) Using a compressed build option A previous article that Art responded to indicated that if I were to change the file table indentifier from a.dll1 to a.dll0 this should get around the problem. This worked temporarily, but now I can no longer create a valid MSI. Can someone assist with a valid workaround. I know ideally I do not want to use dynamic file links but we have an unknown number of icon files at build time I need to pull so removing the dynamic file links in a future build is not an answer either. Thanks.

I too am getting this same behavior. Anyone have an explanation as to why? I'd prefer to not use a custom action if I could use the built in functionality.

Thanks Robert, that lead me in the right direction. I never realized that functionality to test the XML changes. The problem ended up being that there are properties those custom actions use in the property table and if they are not present it caused this behavior. As soon as I manually added those properties to the property table all was well. The test XML changes reported this as missing, but the log file did not during an install. Thanks again

Just a couple thoughts to try to help. What format is the ism in, binary or xml? If binary, can you open it with Orca or does that also complain? If xml, open the file in an XML editor and see if it complains about the format. If you are using source control to store your ism files, I'd recommend always using the xml for the project type. We have had only 1 or 2 problems since going to that method a few years ago. Binary consistently gave us problems.

We have the premier edition and I believe they had the standalone install on a separate disc for IS 2008.

What can happen many times with these types of installers is that the bootstrap that you reference uninstaller.exe then calls something else to finish the uninstall, but MSI is only monitoring the process uninstaller.exe. This is demonstrated by point 3 in that article referenced. In this event you will likely need to write your own custom action that is in a loop and waits until a certain condition is met. Probably the best way would be to use something like process explorer to manually find out what process is really finishing the uninstall then monitor that process at run time of the install to completion in your C.A.

for just debugging purposes what about putting a condition on one of your controls on that dialog and checking for "Missing" to see when it returns if it is getting that value back as you expect. It takes your testing one step further for the scope of recognition and might help pinpoint where it is dropping.

As the title indicates I am getting this message and I have isolated it to being project specific. The exact contents in the XML File Changes view works in a separate project I created to help isolate the problem so I know it is not the data. Is there a way the IS custom actions or something similar can become corrupted in an isolated project like this as I have checked all the ISXML related tables in direct editor and all were empty before this most recent test of just a new xml file that is vanilla. In the project I currently have a new xml file (not imported) called sample.xml with a root element of product and a child element called option which has one attribute called test being set to 1. I really cannot make it more simple and it still gives a return value 3 on ISXMLCosting. Can anyone assist with this error or explain what you have done to get around this issue if you have encountered it in the past? Thanks.
